The Fresher’s Flu

Sneeze, cough…….cough, cough, sneeze! Pass me a tissue please! The dreaded autumn lurgy has arrived and it goes without saying, where there are people……there are germs! Trying to avoid catching a virus is impossible when you have to share a house / flat with other people. You can’t miss every lecture and use the excuse: ‘I don’t want to catch a cold.’ So here at Condor Properties, we have been looking at ways to fight off colds and get you back on your feet if you are feeling a little run down this October.

1.       Eat Well Feel Well. It’s not rocket science. Eating more vitamin and nutrient enriched fruit and veg will help you build up a stronger resistance to the common cold. Red and orange fruit and veg are packed full of vitamin C which helps your body to fight off infection. Root veg is also seasonal at this time of year and cheap to buy. Here are some great recipe ideas if you fancy cooking up a storm for you and your house mates. http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/healthy-vegetarian http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/how-survive-student-basic-recipes

2.       Blend the Rules – if you are not a fan of meat and 2 veg, why not try making homemade soup or a smoothie. This offers a quick and simple way to get your 5 a day!

3.       Garlic is Not Just to Fend Off Vampires – it’s a “super” vegetable and has been proven to help fend of colds, the flu and other infectious diseases. The magical ingredient ‘Allicin’ encourages white blood cells to reproduce which boosts your body's defense system. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-82099/Can-garlic-sex-cure-cold.html

4.       Protein – the Building Blocks of Life. To help your body recover from attack, eat & drink protein rich products. This will help rebuild your body’s natural defenses, getting you back to normal in no time!

5.       Drink Plenty…..of Water! Rehydrate your body with plenty of fluids to help the infection fighting white blood cells travel around your body faster. When you are dehydrated (from too much alcohol or caffeine) your veins dry up as if they were in a drought. To speed up rehydration, visit your local pharmacy for advice on rehydration packs.

6.       Get FREE Pills and Drugs – One of the benefits of being a student is receiving free prescriptions on the NHS. Your doctor may prescribe paracetamol, decongestion tables and inhalers, cough linctus medication which would normally cost a small fortune. So take advantage of your free prescriptions and stock up.

7.       Stoptober – If you smoke, you are more likely to be at risk of catching a cold/ virus. The NHS Stoptober campaign have some really helpful kits to help you give up. https://stoptober.smokefree.nhs.uk/

8.       Sleeping is Cheating…..Your Body!! Being a busy student, having to juggle Uni life being the social sec and attending every party invite is taxing on your body. Getting a good night sleep every night will improve your ability to fend off nasty bugs. If you’re run down, stop….catch a few zeds and let your body recover. Lack of sleep can lower the body’s ability to fight infection, therefore you are more prone to getting a cold when you are tired! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2102057/Body-clock-alters-immune-Not-sleeping-CAN-make-ill.html

Keep well and we will see you in November!
