Top TV Programmes to watch on Netflix for students

Tom McConnell - Loughborough Universtity

In my opinion Netflix for a student is a life saver, living in halls means your laptop is the place where you will spend most of you time watching TV and films, certainly in your first year but even into all your other years at university. Whatever your taste Netflix has something for you and here are some of my favourites. There will be no spoilers included don’t worry.

1) Suits (2011-Present)

A show that is quite old now but is still running into its 6th season. Suits follows hot shot Manhattan lawyer Harvey Spector and his right-hand man Mike Ross (who isn’t even a real lawyer) as they fight to bring the best for their clients all over New York City. Only 4 of the 6 seasons are on Netflix unfortunately so the box sets for season 5 and 6 may have to go on your Christmas list.

2) The Big Bang Theory (2007-Present)

E4 playing at least one episode of the Big Bang Theory a day is the main reason I got into this show and now Netflix allows me to watch it in order without having to fill in gaps in the story line if I missed an episode. The Big Bang Theory follows the adventure of Sheldon and Leonard, two geeky socially awkward scientists whose brains are full of everything you need to know about sci-fi, comic books and gaming but lack real world experience about most things but seem to be able to get by and navigated with it being very entertaining.

3) Orange Is the New Black (2013-Present)

This is the story of Piper Chapman, a woman who turns herself into prison for crimes she committed 10 years earlier. This Netflix original series follows her escapades in prison as she adjusts to life behind bars and the people she meets. Its 4 seasons will keep you occupied on many a winter night when you need a break from work.

4) Power (2014-Present)

Following the life of James “Ghost” St.Patrick who has everything, a hot new nightclub, a stunning penthouse and a gorgeous wife. What more could he want? You’ll have to watch to find out! With season 4 coming in Summer 2017 there’s plenty of time to get through it before that comes out but it is something you will want to watch.

5) House of Cards (2013-Present)

Another Netflix original series, this one follow the life of Frank Underwood who vies for political position and status in the US white house and will do whatever he needs to get it. A gripping series that throws in a lot of twists and turn and will get you hooked from the outset

6) Gossip Girl (2007-2012)

A somewhat guilty pleasure of mine, Gossip Girl follows the privileged upper class of Manhattan through their high school years and into college as Gossip Girl continues to stir the pot and try to create scandals amongst these teens. Gossip Girl loves to be the breaking source of a scandal and there are plenty over the 6 seasons.

7) Jane the Virgin (2014-Present)

The adventures of a women who is wrongly artificially inseminated, the story gets even crazier when Jane finds out her sperm donor is her boss. The only downfall to this is there is only one season of the show on Netflix so there will be a wait if you want to watch the rest. There is rumour that it should be released on Netflix at some point in October.

8) Reign (2013-Present)

The historical fantasy show that follow the life of Mary Queen of Scots, the teen queen who has the power to influence a lot of people’s lives throughout the world. Mary looks to find a balance between the demands of her country and those of her heart. 3 seasons of this will keep you more than occupied.

9) Pramface (2012-2014)

Two teenagers having to grow up incredibly quickly after a one-night stand leads them becoming parents. The show then spans the time of the pregnancy and the new parents raising their child. It covers the problems they face including their more than unhappy parents. Pramface is a show which you can finish in a couple of days and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

10) Friday Night Lights (2006-2011)

One of the first things I ever watched on Netflix, this follows the life of a high school American Football coach in his pursuit of a national championship. The trials and tribulations of his life and his team’s lives lead the way in this one, with them having problems both on and off the pitch. 5 seasons of this show will keep you occupied for a good while.
